Social Relations of the Zubayrids in Hijaz during the Period (74-232 AH / 692-847 AD): A Historical and Analytical Study

Abstract

This study investigates the social networks and strategies of the Zubayrids, the descendants of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, in the Hejaz from 74 to 232 AH (692-847 CE), focusing on how they preserved their influence after the collapse of their political aspirations following the death of Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr in 73 AH (692 CE). Using a descriptive-analytical historical approach grounded in the collection, evaluation, and comparison of evidence from primary sources, the research examines their social relations under both the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates and traces the evolution of their status throughout the period. The findings show that the Zubayrids transformed their noble lineage, scholarly reputation, and family connections into sources of social authority that compensated for their loss of political power. They reinforced their position through strategic marriages with leading Qurayshi families, regular interaction with caliphs, mediation on behalf of the people of Medina, and active engagement in scholarship, hadith transmission, and literary pursuits. The study further reveals that while the Umayyads pursued a policy of controlled accommodation conditioned on political loyalty, the Abbasids adopted a more favorable approach based on recognition and inclusion. As a result, the Zubayrids evolved from former political rivals into prominent social elites who served as influential intermediaries between Hejazi society and the ruling state.
