Preserving the Architectural and Urban Cultural Heritage to Achieve Sustainability: Ibb City as a Case-in-Point

Abstract

The research in the architectural and urban cultural heritage field aims to investigate the conditions that created the various heritage elements and how the Yemeni man treated them. It also aims to evaluate these solutions from a scientific perspective in order to advance the contemporary architectural and urban environment. This contributes to rehabilitating our distinguished architectural heritage, highlighting the cultural value of heritage, and raising community awareness of the importance of our cultural heritage. This study deals with the concept of heritage through international conventions, UNESCO, laws and legislation, showing the importance of the architectural heritage of society and how to preserve it. It also highlights the responsibility of the community towards heritage, and what can be done to protect it as part of the national character, the impact of the quality of life on the heritage environment, as well as the impact of globalization on the culture of Yemeni society. The study concludes with results that contribute to preserving the elements of the architectural and urban heritage of Yemeni cities and reducing the problems they suffer from with a view to achieving environmental, economic, and social sustainability strategies.
