Social, Psychological, and Intellectual Implications in Alawi Taha Al-Safi’s Short and Very Short Stories

Abstract

This study examines Alawi Taha Al-Safi’s short story collections: "Prospects into the Inside," "Fortunes, O World, Fortunes," and "I Was on the Hijacked Plane", voicing  the author’s innermost self-workings,  his society norms,, and his dissatisfaction with certain prevailing negative customs. The study is divided into an introduction and three sections covering social significance, psychological significance, and intellectual significance. The study concluded with some significant findings. It revealed that Alawi Taha Al-Safi’s  contributions were evident in addressing social issues such as poverty, generational conflicts, and the problems resulting from the social changes witnessed by the community during that period. Women occupied a key position in Safi’s social issues, including the males’ superiority over females and early marriage. The author strongly advocated  granting women the rights they were deprived of such as the right to education, the right to choose a spouse, and gender equality. It was also revealed that the writer’s   ideological and intellectual advocacy for the Palestinian issue  was  a recurring concern in many of his stories, depicting the suffering and struggles of Arab citizens at the hands of the enemy who seized their land and possessions.
