The Poetics of Space in The Other Shore by Mohammed Jibril

This study explores the narrative functions of time and space in Mohammed Jibril’s novel The Other Shore. Drawing on modern narrative theory, the research highlights how time and space are not merely background elements but vital components that shape events and influence character interactions. Jibril stands out among Arab novelists for his precise and ideologically charged depiction of spatial and temporal settings. The study is divided into an introduction that traces the role of space and time in contemporary narrative analysis, followed by two main sections focusing respectively on the spatial and temporal structures within the novel. Findings indicate that Jibril meticulously constructs the novel’s space to reflect the cultural identity and ideological undercurrents of the narrative. Temporally, the plot unfolds linearly, with occasional flashbacks that return to the story’s origins, revealing deeper layers of meaning and character motivation.
