Representation of the Socially Marginalized in the Short Stories of Ṭalib al-Rifa’i

This research examines the representation of socially marginalized groups in the short stories of the Kuwaiti author Ṭalib al-Rifa’i, focusing on the Bidun (stateless individuals), migrant laborers, and gender minorities. Adopting a social critical approach, the study investigates how these groups are portrayed within the fictional society and how their marginalization reflects broader social, economic, and cultural exclusion. The analysis reveals that migrant laborers constitute a vital yet oppressed element of Kuwaiti society, suffering simultaneously from psychological, social, and spatial alienation, as well as institutionalized forms of coercion and deprivation. The Bidun emerge as a particularly complex and controversial case—excluded, displaced from their homeland, and deprived of basic citizenship rights. Their existence is marked by rejection, social invisibility, and enduring alienation. Through these portrayals, Al-Rifa’i exposes the realities of marginalization and highlights the intersection of identity, power, and belonging in Kuwaiti society. The study thus contributes to understanding how contemporary Kuwaiti fiction functions as a literary lens for exploring the human cost of social exclusion.
