Women’s Island: Narratives of Feminine Space and Shifts of Power

Abstract

This study explores the recurring motif of “Women’s Island” in travel writing, wonder literature, and select foundational global texts, arguing that it functions as an imagined narrative construct shaped within a symbolic system rather than a real geographical referent. Using a cultural approach informed by feminist criticism, psychoanalytic insights, and the notion of counter-writing, the study investigates how these narratives produce a self-contained feminine space in which male presence is either erased or confined to a marginal role, and in which reproduction, labor, and social order are reconfigured beyond dominant patriarchal norms. The analysis shows that, although many of these narratives originate within male-authored traditions, they nevertheless unsettle patriarchal centrality from within and expose a structural tension between the narrator’s authority and what the story ultimately permits or reveals. The study further traces the motif’s later adaptations and shifts in modern narrative forms and visual media- such as the novel, film, and anime- where “Women’s Island” becomes a flexible narrative pattern repeatedly used to question the evolving relationship between gender and power across changing cultural contexts.
