Cultural Components and Their Impact on the Formation of Taha Hussein’s Consciousness

Abstract

This study examines the cultural components that shaped the critical consciousness of Taha Hussein, arguing that his intellectual formation was the product of multiple environments rather than an exclusive reliance on Western culture. It traces the early sources that informed his methodological orientation, beginning with his academic engagement with classical Arabic heritage and extending to the modern approaches he encountered through his teachers at the National University and during his academic mission abroad. The study situates Hussein’s controversial scientific method—most notably articulated in On Pre-Islamic Poetry—within a broader trajectory of intellectual development rooted in social, educational, and cultural contexts. By focusing on his early upbringing, experiences at al-Azhar, and subsequent university education, the research demonstrates that skepticism functioned as a formative disposition long before his exposure to Western thought. This disposition later crystallized into a coherent methodological stance after sustained engagement with European culture. The study thus challenges reductive readings that attribute Hussein’s method solely to Western influence and instead emphasizes the interaction between indigenous cultural foundations and external intellectual currents. It concludes that Hussein’s method of doubt emerged from a complex process of intellectual formation shaped by cumulative cultural sources that collectively contributed to his transformative role in modern Arabic literary criticism.
