Abstract

This study investigates the aesthetic and semantic functions of jinas ‘paronomasia’ in the Luzūmiyyāt of Abu al-Ala al-Maʿarri, arguing that paronomasia operates as a central stylistic and expressive strategy rather than a mere rhetorical embellishment. Through an artistic analytical approach, the research demonstrates how paronomasia contributes to the musical structure of the poetic text while simultaneously generating layered meanings that deepen poetic expression. The study is organized into a preface and four main sections addressing complete, incomplete, derivational, and compound paronomasia. The analysis reveals that al-Maʿarri employs paronomasia to serve broader intellectual and philosophical purposes, allowing language to function as a medium for reflection on harmony, symmetry, and opposition. Rather than being limited to ornamental usage, paronomasia becomes a tool for articulating complex relationships between words, ideas, and values within the poetic discourse. The findings further suggest that al-Maʿarri’s use of paronomasia reflects his philosophical vision of equivalence and contrast among people and concepts, thereby transforming rhetorical technique into a vehicle for meaning-making. The study concludes that paronomasia plays a crucial role in shaping both the aesthetic texture and the interpretive depth of the Luzūmiyyāt, reaffirming its significance within classical Arabic poetic rhetoric.
