Abstract

This study examines the construction of detail and descriptive discourse in Abdulaziz Al-Saqabi’s novel Barakat, Suspended in Imagination from the perspective of poetics, while drawing on semiotics to interpret the symbols and meanings embedded in the novelistic discourse. It focuses on the close relationship between detail and description in constructing narrative scenes, shaping the novel’s aesthetic structure, and articulating its movement between reality and imagination. The study explores the concept and function of detail, its relationship to textual thresholds, its integration into the novelistic fabric, and its role in constructing descriptive discourse. It also investigates how descriptive details contribute to narrative development and generate meanings beyond their immediate representational function. The findings demonstrate that the novel employs minute details as a significant narrative and aesthetic device through which the duality of reality and imagination is revealed. These details also contribute to representing the fragmentation of identity and the internal conflict experienced by the narrator-protagonist. Furthermore, the multiplicity of voices within the novel reinforces these tensions, allowing descriptive discourse to function as an integral component of both the narrative structure and the production of meaning.
