The Structure and Signs of Narrative Discourse in the Story of the People of the Elephant: A Semiotic Study

Abstract

This study examines the narrative structure and semiotic transformations in the Quranic story of the People of the Elephant, focusing on how narrative, semantic, visual, and phonetic signs contribute to meaning construction in Surat al-Fil. Employing a structural semiotic approach, it investigates how the Quran transforms the historical event of Abraha’s attempted attack on the Kaaba into a symbolic narrative that challenges conventional perceptions of power and emphasizes the supremacy of divine authority. The analysis addresses three interconnected dimensions: the structure of the narrative event, the semiotics of space and material transformation, and the role of phonetic rhythm in reinforcing meaning. The findings reveal that the surah employs a highly condensed narrative structure centered on divine action, transforming the elephant from a symbol of military strength and intimidation into a sign of powerlessness. The opposition between the elephant and “eaten straw” (al-asf al-ma'kul) establishes a central semiotic contrast between magnitude and fragmentation, strength and collapse. The study further demonstrates that phonetic rhythm contributes to the coherence and semantic unity of the text, highlighting the integration of narrative structure and semiotic expression in Quranic discourse.
