Compendia of Poets’ Anecdotes: From Report to Narrative Design: A Study of Paratextual Discourse and the Compiler’s Role

This article re-examines Compendia of Poets’ Anecdotes by treating their paratexts—titles, prefaces, dedications, and sequencing—as clues to a hidden narrative blueprint devised by the compiler. Instead of viewing the compiler as a passive transmitter, the study argues that he actively structures and interprets the material. Using narratological tools, Genette’s paratext theory, and the notions of the implied author and authorial effacement, the research uncovers how compilers steer readers’ expectations and meanings. After an introduction and a preface that outline the poet’s profile and define repetition, the analysis unfolds across three sections devoted to letter-level, word-level, and sentence-level recurrence. Test cases include anecdote collections from the 3rd to the 10th Islamic centuries—among them works on Ḥatim al-Ṭaʾī, Abu Nuwas, and al-Ḥallaj. The study concludes that many of these ostensibly factual compendia possess an internal narrative design and rhetorical coherence, inviting a fresh classification of the genre through contemporary narrative criticism.
