The Role of Saudi Universities in Light of the Implementation of Digital Governance: Expectations and Future Trends

This study investigates how digital governance can enhance the performance of Saudi universities by drawing on global experiences in applying artificial intelligence and smart systems to academic, administrative, research, and community functions. Employing a descriptive analytical method through the review of prior studies, reports, and international practices, it examines mechanisms and applications of digital governance in university management. Findings reveal that digital governance fosters transparency, accountability, efficient resource use, improved academic and administrative outcomes, and stronger local and international research collaboration. The integration of artificial intelligence further enables student performance prediction, curriculum development, and personalized learning, reducing failure rates and boosting achievement. Additionally, digital governance promotes innovation, safeguards data, strengthens ties with communities and the private sector, and supports internationalization, thereby elevating global university rankings. Based on these results, the researcher proposes a vision structured around five elements: principles, objectives, content, requirements, and implementation phases; to advance institutional, academic, and research performance, enrich the learning experience, and leverage global practices to position Saudi universities toward globalization.
