Abstract

This study examines patterns of linguistic rule formation in the Quranic Readings of al-Zahrawayn through the phenomenon of structural simplification by substitution (ibdal). It aims to identify the general linguistic principles underlying vowel and consonant substitution and to demonstrate how these patterns contributed to the formulation of comprehensive grammatical and phonological rules in the Arabic linguistic tradition. Employing an inductive analytical approach, the study analyzes forty-eight instances of substitution and derives eight overarching linguistic principles from them. The analysis covers both vowel substitution and consonant substitution while exploring the phonological motivations behind these changes, including the avoidance of phonetic heaviness, vowel harmony, articulatory economy, the avoidance of adjacent consonants, preservation of passive forms through ishmam, and adherence to original linguistic structures. The findings demonstrate that the Quranic Readings served as a primary source for establishing and validating universal linguistic rules. They further reveal that structural simplification operates as a systematic linguistic principle governed by well-defined criteria, including phonetic strength, linguistic causation, frequency of usage, linguistic intuition, and contrast. The study concludes that substitution in the Quranic Readings reflects a coherent theoretical framework that significantly contributed to the development of Arabic linguistic theory.
