Abstract

The present study examined the mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between negative rumination and psychological well-being among female secondary school students experiencing difficulties with the General Aptitude Test. A descriptive correlational design was employed with a sample of 203 female students. Data were collected using Neff’s (2003) Self-Compassion Scale, translated and standardized by Mohammed Al-Sayed Abdel-Rahman et al. (2015); the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS; Treynor et al., 2003), standardized for the Saudi context by Al-Muhammadi et al. (2025); and Ryff’s (2007) Psychological Well-Being Scale, translated and standardized by Magda Al-Keshky (2021). The findings indicated a statistically significant difference in self-compassion at the .01 level, with scores exceeding the theoretical mean, suggesting relatively high levels of self-compassion among the participants. At the same time, elevated scores on the lack-of-self-compassion dimension indicated variability in the participants’ self-compassion profiles. No statistically significant difference was found in ruminative responses, which were at a moderate level. In contrast, psychological well-being scores were significantly higher than the theoretical mean at the .01 level. Mediation analysis using regression revealed a statistically significant indirect effect of ruminative responses on psychological well-being through the lack-of-self-compassion dimension, with a standardized regression coefficient of β = −.155. This finding supports the mediating role of the lack-of-self-compassion dimension in the association between rumination and psychological well-being. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of self-compassion in understanding psychological well-being among female students experiencing difficulties with the General Aptitude Test and suggest its potential relevance to psychological counseling and intervention programs targeting maladaptive rumination and well-being.
