Abstract

This study compared the effectiveness of simultaneous prompting (SP) and constant time delay (CTD) in developing packaging and wrapping skills among female students with intellectual disabilities. It also examined the relative efficiency of the two strategies in terms of rate of mastery, error reduction, skill maintenance, and generalization. A modified alternating treatments design (AATD) was employed with four female students with intellectual disabilities enrolled in a vocational rehabilitation program. Both strategies were implemented across baseline, intervention, maintenance, and generalization phases. Student performance was assessed using structured observation forms, with performance levels systematically recorded during each session. The results indicated that both strategies were effective in developing packaging and wrapping skills, with all participants reaching the mastery criterion. The students also demonstrated high levels of skill maintenance following the intervention and successfully generalized the acquired skills to novel situations. However, CTD resulted in faster attainment of the mastery criterion, more stable performance, and greater independence. In contrast, SP was more effective in reducing errors during the initial stages of learning but was associated with relatively greater variability in performance and a slower rate of mastery. Overall, both strategies supported skill acquisition, maintenance, and generalization, with differential advantages across learning outcomes.
