Development of an Emotional Intelligence Scale for Female Students at Qassim University Using Quadratic Logistic Model

Abstract

The study aimed to develop an emotional intelligence scale using the Quadratica Logistic Model for female students at Qassim University, based on the mental ability model proposed by Mayer & Salovey. The model consists of four main components: perception, appraisal, expression of emotions and reactions, emotional facilitation of thinking, understanding of emotions, and the ability to regulate emotions to enhance emotional and intellectual growth. Seventy-four items were formulated to measure these components, reduced to 57 after expert judgment. The scale was administered to a sample of 1403 students, demonstrating effective Quadratic Logistic Model in matching sample responses on the scale, achieving high reliability and validity indicators, and low estimation errors. Results of a chi-squared test revealed that the scale items matched in their final form with the Quadratic Logistic Model. Standard errors for estimation decreased, reflecting the accuracy of the scale and the effectiveness of the Quadratic Logistic Model in assessing the abilities of students with low and moderate emotional intelligence. However, its accuracy was lower in estimating students’ abilities with high and very high emotional intelligence. The final scale was graded to 46 items after excluding negative and non-relevant items.
