The Principles of Interpretation according to Imam Ibn Adil al-Hanbali through His Book: (Al-Lubab fi Ulum al-Kitab): A Theoretical and Applied Study

This study explores the interpretive methodology of Imam Ibn Adil, a distinguished figure whose contributions significantly shaped Qur’anic exegesis. By examining foundational principles in classical interpretive texts, the research aims to guide contemporary understanding of the Qur’an and expose interpretive errors driven by subjective motives. Employing inductive, analytical, and deductive methods, the study traces Ibn Adil’s exegetical framework as presented in Al-Lubab fi Ulum Al-Kitab, revealing his consistent reliance on transmitted narrations and prophetic traditions to substantiate interpretive positions. His approach emphasizes contextual fidelity, general interpretation unless specified, prioritization of views supported by textual evidence, adherence to the apparent meaning unless proven otherwise, and preference for majority scholarly consensus—principles that collectively safeguard the integrity of Qur’anic interpretation.
