Abstract

The present descriptive study examined the relationships among perceived social support, psychological well-being, and distress tolerance skills, with particular attention to the association between distress tolerance skills and psychological well-being. It also investigated the direct and indirect mediating role of distress tolerance skills in the relationship between perceived social support and psychological well-being among emotionally abused wives in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The study employed a descriptive research design with a sample of 170 married women from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, aged 23 to 59 years (M = 39.86, SD = 9.12). A battery of psychological measures translated and standardized by the researcher was administered, including the Emotional Abuse Scale, Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Distress Tolerance Scale developed by Simons and Gaher, and a demographic information form. The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation at the 0.01 level between perceived social support and psychological well-being, whereas statistically significant negative correlations at the 0.01 level were found between distress tolerance skills and both perceived social support and psychological well-being. The findings also confirmed the direct and indirect mediating role of distress tolerance skills in the relationship between perceived social support and psychological well-being among the study participants.
