School Environment and Academic Pressures as Predictors of Psychosomatic Symptoms among Female Secondary School Students in Buraydah City.

This study aimed to investigate the role of the school environment and academic stress in predicting psychosomatic symptoms among female high school students. It also sought to identify the prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms, as well as the levels of school environment quality and academic stress within this group. The sample consisted of 534 third-year secondary students. A descriptive–correlational methodology was employed, utilizing the following instruments: the School Environment Scale by Halawah (2005), translated by Ghazlan and Muqabala (2011); the Academic Stress Scale by Sun et al. (2011), translated by the researchers; the Psychosomatic Symptoms Scale by Lei Li et al. (2020), translated by the researchers; and the Cornell Index for Neurotic and Psychosomatic Traits by Brodman et al. (1982), translated and adapted by Abu Al-Nil (1995) and standardized for the Saudi context by Saud (2015). Findings revealed that students demonstrated above-average levels of both school environment factors and academic stress. Results further indicated a remarkable prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms, with 390 students (73%) showing confirmed symptoms and 144 students (27%) showing none. The study also concluded that both the school environment and academic stress significantly predict psychosomatic symptoms among female secondary students.
